Early Life
Chinsea Linda Lee, known professionally as Shenseea, was born on October 1st, 1996, in Kingston, Jamaica. She was raised in nearby Mandeville by her mother and aunt, as she never knew her father. Growing up in a Christian household, Shenseea would pray and fast, often waking up at 4 AM to get in her prayer and worship before heading off to school. She graduated from Mona High School and then went to Exed Community College to pursue her degree in Entertainment Management, but she dropped out to take an office job.
Career
Shenseea's music journey began by performing an acapella version of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All," which she nailed on her first attempt. From that point forward, she continued developing her voice while listening to American pop, R&B, and soul music. During the 8th grade, she began writing her first song, but she couldn't get past three lines. So, she began focusing on covers of other artists' music and posting her renditions of American and Jamaican artists' songs on her social media pages.
After having a son at the age of 19, Shenseea began taking music more seriously and was introduced to Romeich Major, the biggest entertainment and promotional juggernaut based out of Kingston, Jamaica. She quickly signed up with his agency and began earning herself promotional opportunities. She performed at brand events for the likes of Hennessy, Red Stripe, Smirnoff, and more. While these events helped showcase her talent, by 2017, she was collaborating with Vybz Kartel on "Loodi" and Sean Paul on "Rolling." Following that, Shenseea cemented her burgeoning reputation within the dancehall genre.
In 2018, she was invited by Christina Aguilera to appear on her album Liberation's song titled "Right Moves." That same year, she dropped the track "Secret (Remix)" in collaboration with Vybz Kartel. By 2019, the singer signed with Interscope Records and then set to work on her debut album. Under the label, she released the song "Blessed" with Tyga. However, her mother passed away in June 2020, which brought some of her old ideas back to the surface.
In March 2022, Shenseea released her debut album, "Alpha," which contains the hit single "Lick" featuring Megan Thee Stallion. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard Reggae Album Chart and sold over 66,000 units in 2022 alone, making it the second-best-selling album from a Jamaican artist to be released that year.
In addition to her musical career, Shenseea has also made headlines for her fashion sense and entrepreneurial ventures. She has launched her own clothing line, Romeich Wear, in partnership with her manager Romeich Major. The line features trendy and stylish streetwear designs, and has been worn by several celebrities.
Shenseea has also been an advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about her struggles with depression and anxiety. She has used her platform to encourage others to seek help and support for their mental health.
Despite her success, Shenseea remains humble and grounded, often expressing her gratitude to her fans and team for their support. She has become an inspiration to many young people in Jamaica and beyond, showing that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.
As she continues to push boundaries in the music industry, Shenseea's star is only set to rise further. With her powerful vocals, infectious energy, and unique style, she is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and promising artists to watch out for in the coming years.
