Interview with Fashion Designer Jameil Rowe



Jameil Rowe is a Jamaican born fashion designer and the founder of JetsetLife Apparel. – a lifestyle travel wardrobe brand, including easily packable travel merchandise.


Tell us about yourself and your fashion brand.

My name is Jameil Rowe. I love to travel, swim, watch movies, eat different foods, and spending time with family. The name of my fashion brand is called The JetsetLife Apparel. It was derived from my love of traveling, meeting different people, seeing different cultures and peoples way of life.


When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a designer?

I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer at the age of 17. I loved fashion and clothing so I use to spray paint t-shirts in my dad’s backyard in Jamaica.

What is your favorite part about being a designer?

My favorite part of being a designer is people enjoying the finished products that I have designed.


How would you describe your brand aesthetics?

I would describe my brand’s aesthetic as comfort casual.


What has been the biggest challenge you faced in starting your own business?

The biggest challenge I faced was finding the right set of manufactures that understood my philosophy; quality over quantity. I didn’t care for how many pieces it was I wanted my customers have faith in their purchases that they were getting quality and durable products.


What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned since starting my own company is you’re going to make mistakes along the way but those trials and errors pave the way for great success.

What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?

The biggest rookie mistake I made starting out was underpricing and undervaluing my products just to make everyone happy.


How have you developed as a fashion designer?

I have developed as a fashion designer by adapting to different styles and trends.


What kind of person do you create your clothes for?

I create my clothes for everyone who enjoys traveling, from youth to adults.


How do you want people to feel when wearing your clothes?

I want everyone to feel comfortable, confident, and satisfied.


Where do you look for creative inspiration?

I get creative inspiration from everywhere and everyone.

What do you want your designs to be known for? What differentiates them from other brands?

I want my designs to be known for creativity and innovations. The ability to connect with everyone no matter where there from differentiates my brand from others.


Is it hard to stay innovative?

No, it’s not hard to stay innovative because I keep on changing my style and designs.


What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?

Social media plays an important role by giving you feedback and inspiration. It shows what people gravitate to.


Which celebrity would you want to see wearing your collection?

I would want every celebrity to wear it because it’s a worldwide brand.

Do you have a favorite designer?

I like Virgil Abloh from OFF-WHITE and Louis Vuitton and Kimberley Elliott (MKNE)


Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself in 5 years having my own warehouse and the brand just evolving, getting bigger and bigger.


Any advice to other young designers?

My advice to young designers is to step out of your comfort zone, never give up, and take constructive criticism.
