King Scholar Reigns Supreme: Scholar Wins Grenada's 50th Independence Calypso Competition!

Grenada, known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant musical traditions, witnessed an electrifying showcase of talent as Finley Jeffrey, affectionately known as "Scholar" or "King Scholar," emerged triumphant in the 50th Independence Calypso Finals held recently. Competing against nine other skilled performers, Scholar captivated the audience with his mesmerizing performance of 'Still Young,' securing the coveted first place and a prize of $15,000.

Scholar Wins Grenada's 50th Independence Calypso Competition

The Independence Calypso Finals, a cornerstone of Grenada's cultural calendar, serves as a platform for artists to express themselves through music while honoring the nation's journey to independence. Scholar, a stalwart in Grenada's calypso arena with a remarkable ten Calypso Monarch titles to his name, added another illustrious achievement to his repertoire by clinching victory in this historic competition.


Micah Joseph, also known as 'Baracka,' showcased his talent and secured the second position with his soul-stirring rendition of '50 Stories,' earning him a prize of $12,000. Meanwhile, Jermaine Simon, affectionately dubbed 'Superstar,' claimed the third spot with her captivating performance of 'At 50,' earning a prize of $10,000.


The event, held at the Sauteurs Bus Terminal on Saturday, 27th January 2024, served as a testament to the enduring spirit and creativity of Grenadian artists. From Scholar's commanding stage presence to Baracka's poignant lyrics and Superstar's captivating performance, each artist contributed to an unforgettable evening of music and celebration.
