The full cast of Bob Marley's upcoming stage musical Get Up, Stand Up! has been announced.
Gabrielle Brooks will play Rita Marley, opposite the previously announced Arinzé Kene as Bob. Cliny Dyer will now direct the production, taking over from the originally announced Dominic Cooke.
Shanay Holmes (Cindy Shakespeare), Sophia Mackay (Judy Mowatt), Melissa Brown-Taylor (Marcia Griffiths), Jacade Simpson (Bunny Wailer), and Natey Jones will join them (Peter Tosh).
The show will feature Marley's iconic songs "No Woman No Cry," "Exodus 3," "Three Little Birds," "Get Up Stand Up," and others. Marley, who was born in Jamaica in 1945, is regarded as a music pioneer for his blend of reggae, ska, and rocksteady. He passed away in 1981, at the age of 36. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Marley's family has given their blessing to the musical.
The musical was supposed to begin in February, but that date was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic. The production had originally planned to open in June, but the fall became a more likely timeframe.
