  • Understanding Black Women’s Hair: Navigating Low Porosity and Low Elasticity for Healthy Hair

Black women’s hair is beautifully diverse, but it often comes with unique challenges. Two common issues many Black women face are low porosity and low elasticity. These hair characteristics can make maintaining moisture, styling, and overall hair health more difficult if not properly understood. In this article, we’ll break down what low porosity and low elasticity mean, how they affect your hair, and how you can tailor your hair care routine to nurture and maintain healthy, vibrant hair. What is Low Porosity Hair? Hair porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Low porosity hair has tightly bound cuticles, making it difficult for water and moisturizing products to penetrate the hair shaft. This can lead to product buildup, dry hair, and difficulty in keeping your hair moisturized. How to Identify Low Porosity Hair Water Test : Take a strand of clean hair and place it in a glass of water. If it floats, your hair likely has low porosity. High porosity hair will sink because it quickly absorbs moisture. Resistance to Moisture : If you find that products sit on top of your hair rather than being absorbed, you likely have low porosity hair. Product Buildup : Since moisture struggles to penetrate low porosity hair, products often build up on the scalp and hair shaft. How to Care for Low Porosity Hair Maintaining low porosity hair requires focusing on hydration and gentle product usage to prevent buildup. Here are some tips to keep in mind: 1. Use Lightweight, Water-Based Products Because low porosity hair resists moisture, heavy creams and oils will often sit on top of the hair, making it greasy without actually nourishing the strands. Opt for lightweight, water-based moisturizers that can be absorbed into the hair shaft. Recommended Products : Aloe vera-based leave-in conditioners Light oils like grapeseed oil or argan oil Misting sprays with a water base 2. Incorporate Heat for Better Absorption Heat opens the hair’s cuticles, allowing moisture to penetrate. Incorporating heat into your regimen, especially during conditioning treatments, can significantly improve moisture retention. Recommended Techniques : Use a hooded dryer or steamer during deep conditioning Apply heat caps or warm towels over plastic caps to intensify the conditioning process 3. Clarify Regularly Since low porosity hair is prone to product buildup, clarifying your scalp and hair is essential. Use clarifying shampoos or apple cider vinegar rinses to gently remove any excess product. Recommended Products : Sulfate-free clarifying shampoos Apple cider vinegar mixed with water as a rinse 4. Layer Products Wisely When applying products to low porosity hair, follow the LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method, but with lightweight variations. This ensures the hair gets the necessary moisture without weighing it down. Example Routine : Liquid : Water or a water-based leave-in conditioner Oil : Light oil like jojoba or grapeseed Cream : Lightweight, non-heavy curl cream What is Low Elasticity Hair? Hair elasticity refers to how well your hair can stretch and return to its original form without breaking. Low elasticity hair is brittle, prone to breakage, and lacks the bounce and flexibility of healthy hair. This can result from heat damage, chemical treatments, or lack of moisture. How to Identify Low Elasticity Hair Stretch Test : Take a wet strand of hair and gently stretch it. If it snaps immediately with little to no stretch, you have low elasticity hair. Healthy hair should stretch and bounce back without breaking. Lack of Curl Definition : If your curls don’t hold their shape or if your hair feels limp and weak, low elasticity may be the culprit. How to Care for Low Elasticity Hair Restoring elasticity requires treating your hair with care and focusing on strengthening and moisture balance. Below are steps to help revive and maintain healthy elasticity in your hair. 1. Protein Treatments Protein treatments help to rebuild and strengthen the hair structure, which is essential for improving elasticity. However, balance is key; too much protein can make the hair brittle. Aim for a monthly protein treatment unless your hair feels particularly weak, in which case you can increase frequency. Recommended Products : Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Protein Treatment 2. Moisture-Protein Balance For elasticity, maintaining a balance between moisture and protein is crucial. While protein strengthens the hair, moisture gives it flexibility. Follow protein treatments with a deep moisturizing conditioner to prevent your hair from becoming too brittle. Recommended Products : Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner 3. Avoid Heat and Chemicals Excessive heat styling and chemical treatments, such as relaxers or bleach, can severely compromise hair elasticity. Reducing or eliminating the use of flat irons, curling wands, and harsh chemicals can help restore your hair’s natural bounce. Tips : Opt for protective hairstyles like braids, twists, or buns Air-dry your hair or use low-heat settings when necessary 4. Gentle Detangling and Styling Low elasticity hair is more prone to breakage, so it’s important to handle your hair with care. Use wide-tooth combs, finger detangle, and avoid styles that put too much tension on your strands. Recommended Detanglers : Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In Detangler TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave-In Conditioner Building the Perfect Routine for Low Porosity and Low Elasticity Hair Combining care for low porosity and low elasticity hair can seem overwhelming, but with a tailored routine, you can tackle both effectively. Example Routine Pre-Poo : Use a lightweight oil (e.g., grapeseed oil) or aloe vera gel to coat your hair before shampooing. Shampoo : Use a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo once a month to remove product buildup. Condition : Deep condition with a hydrating, heat-activated treatment. Use a hooded dryer or warm towel for best results. Protein Treatment : Once a month, apply a protein treatment to strengthen the hair. Moisturize : Use a water-based leave-in conditioner followed by a lightweight oil to seal in moisture. Style : Opt for low-manipulation styles, and use a silk or satin scarf at night to protect your hair. Low porosity and low elasticity hair require special care, but with the right routine and products, you can manage and maintain healthy, thriving hair. Understanding your hair's needs allows you to embrace your natural beauty and keep your strands strong, moisturized, and resilient. By incorporating regular hydration, gentle handling, and balancing protein and moisture, you’ll give your hair the best chance to shine. #BlackHairCare #LowPorosityHair #HairElasticity #NaturalHairJourney #HealthyHairTips #BlackWomenHair #CurlyHairCare #MoisturizeLowPorosity #ProteinTreatments #HairCareRoutine #DeepConditioning #HydrateYourCurls #NaturalHairCommunity #LowPorositySolutions #StrengthenYourStrands #ProtectiveHairstyles #MoistureBalance #AfroHairCare #NaturalHairTips #ElasticityRestoration

  • Barbados Mourns the Loss of Dance Icon Tyrone Trotman

Barbados' dance community is in mourning following the passing of Tyrone Trotman, an influential dancer, choreographer, cultural mentor, and elder. Known for his contributions to dance and cultural preservation, Trotman passed away in the early hours of Sunday, according to a statement from the National Cultural Foundation (NCF). A respected figure across generations, Trotman was revered as a mentor to many of today’s prominent dancers and choreographers. Over his career, he played a crucial role in shaping the artistic journey of numerous individuals and groups. Among those he worked with were Dance Nationale Afrique, founded by Cavil Best; Dancin’ Africa and Erdiston Primary School, under the guidance of Jennifer Sealy; and the former folk group St John Dramatic Society, managed by folk advocate Pearson Bellamy. Additionally, he collaborated with Kevin Carvalho and Alicia Hurley, who now serves as the NCF’s Cultural Officer for Dance, to help establish the group Tyrona. Trotman’s early years in dance were rooted in his training with the Barbados Dance Theatre under the direction of its founder, the late Mary Stevens. From these beginnings, he developed a passion for using dance as a means to unite and empower working-class communities. This commitment became a defining theme in his work, as he sought to bridge cultural gaps and uplift people through the arts. The NCF paid tribute to Trotman’s legacy, noting his impact as both a creator and a mentor. Trotman’s influence extended well beyond his choreography and performances; he embodied a spirit of resilience and pride in cultural heritage that inspired countless dancers in Barbados and beyond.

  • Jamaica and U.S. Team Up to Track Down Delinquent Student Loan Borrowers Abroad

November 11, 2024 - Jamaican nationals with outstanding student loans who have migrated to the United States may soon find their immigration status at risk if they are not up-to-date on their repayment obligations. In a landmark move, the governments of Jamaica and the United States have launched a partnership aimed at identifying Jamaican borrowers in the U.S. who are behind on their student loan payments to the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB). Cheryl Surjue, Manager of Loan Servicing at the SLB, recently spoke with JIS News about the new arrangement, explaining that it aims to solve the problem of “lost borrowers”—Jamaican professionals who leave the country and default on their loans, leaving the SLB with limited ways to track them. “When they leave, we are not able to fully track their whereabouts, [and] those loans tend to go bad,” Surjue said, noting the burden these unpaid debts place on the SLB’s resources. The agreement allows U.S. immigration authorities to check with the SLB when Jamaican nationals apply for visa renewals, verifying whether they have any outstanding loans. According to Surjue, this process applies particularly to individuals who migrated to the U.S. on visas like the J1, a popular temporary work and study visa. “Persons who may have migrated on the J1 visa and want to renew their status with the U.S., before they can actually do that, there’s an arrangement where the U.S. government needs to find out from us (Jamaica) if this person is indebted to the Government,” she explained. This system, which may require borrowers to fully settle any outstanding balance, has already proven effective in recovering delinquent payments. While borrowers previously may have been out of reach, the new collaboration gives the SLB an avenue to recoup debts, effectively nudging borrowers to fulfill their financial obligations. Surjue shared that many borrowers only begin to make payments after they realize it could affect their immigration status. “It is at this point that you’ll find most of these beneficiaries will actually start servicing their loans, because we did not know and they didn’t communicate with us that they migrated,” she added. Alongside this new tracking arrangement, the SLB is rolling out a Financial Literacy Programme aimed at helping borrowers manage their debt responsibly before it becomes a problem. Surjue encouraged borrowers to be proactive by notifying the SLB of their plans to migrate and setting up repayment arrangements. “Before you get to that point, we want persons to be responsible borrowers. This is why we’ve actually launched our Financial Literacy Programme, to know how we can assist and how the beneficiaries may go about repaying their loan and not wait until it gets to that point of the loan being bad or we have to solicit debt collectors to try and locate you,” she said. Through this partnership and educational outreach, the SLB hopes to foster a culture of financial responsibility, particularly among Jamaican students and young professionals who seek opportunities abroad. By addressing loan repayment issues early, borrowers can avoid unexpected roadblocks to their immigration status, and the SLB can ensure more consistent repayment, strengthening its ability to support future students. This cross-border initiative represents a significant step toward accountability and financial stability for Jamaican borrowers overseas.

The Bob Marley: One Love  soundtrack, released alongside the Marley biopic, is a tribute to the reggae legend, featuring reimagined songs that connect with both die-hard Marley fans and new listeners. The Academy’s inclination toward recognizing reggae’s roots, particularly with an icon like Marley, makes this album a strong favorite among voters who value tradition and legacy. While Marley’s music always resonates, awarding One Love  would be a choice rooted in honoring the genre’s past, rather than embracing its present and future.  Additionally,  "Evolution" by The Wailers, with its rootsy authenticity, might also be a safer pick. The Editor's Pick : "Never Gets Late Here" by Shenseea feels like a groundbreaking moment. Her ability to bridge dancehall and pop creates a sound with global appeal, potentially reaching a wider audience and introducing reggae to a new generation. Why Shenseea Deserves the Win :Shenseea has single-handedly redefined the global perception of dancehall with her album Never Gets Late Here . In 2024, she solidified her position as one of Jamaica’s most promising stars, blending dancehall with pop, R&B, and Afrobeats to create a refreshing, genre-blurring sound. Her international appeal, highlighted by collaborations with global music heavyweights and performances on major festival stages, has pushed dancehall into new mainstream territory. Never Gets Late Here  is a bold, fearless project that appeals to dancehall purists and crossover audiences alike. This Grammy win would validate Shenseea’s innovation and her role in expanding the genre’s reach far beyond Jamaica’s shores. She has successfully introduced dancehall to new markets and demographics, proving the genre’s potential for crossover appeal in an era of music globalization. Awarding Shenseea would be a powerful nod to the Grammy’s recognition of reggae’s evolution, showing that they’re not just honoring the past but also looking forward to its future through fresh, trailblazing artists. The Verdict While Bob Marley: One Love  is the likely winner due to the timeless appeal of Marley’s legacy, Never Gets Late Here  by Shenseea truly deserves the Grammy. Shenseea’s groundbreaking work and global success make her a vital figure in the future of reggae and dancehall. Recognizing her with a Grammy would signal the Recording Academy’s commitment to acknowledging reggae’s next generation, honoring an artist who has made remarkable strides in 2024 by taking the genre to new heights. Will the Grammys be bold enough to crown a new dancehall icon, or will they celebrate reggae’s roots by choosing a classic sound? All eyes will be on the Crypto.com Arena on February 2, 2025, as the reggae world awaits an answer that could redefine the genre’s future.

  • A Taste of Tradition: Caribbean Christmas Ham Recipe

When Christmas time rolls around, kitchens across the Caribbean come alive with the festive aromas of spiced meats, sweet treats, and hearty family dishes. One iconic centerpiece on many tables is the Caribbean Christmas Ham—a juicy, glazed delight that's often the highlight of Christmas Day. Caribbean Christmas ham is known for its fusion of flavors, incorporating sweet, spicy, and citrus notes. Here’s a recipe that brings the taste of the islands to your holiday table, wherever you are. Caribbean Christmas Ham Recipe Prep Time:  20 minutes Cook Time:  2-3 hours Serves:  10-12 Ingredients 1 whole bone-in ham  (about 10-12 pounds) Cloves  (for studding the ham, around 25-30 whole cloves) 1 cup pineapple juice 1/2 cup orange juice 1/4 cup honey 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup dark rum  (optional, for an extra Caribbean kick) 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons ground allspice 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon ginger powder 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1/4 cup maraschino cherry juice  (optional for color and extra sweetness) Pineapple rings and maraschino cherries  (for garnish) Instructions Prepare the Ham Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Score the surface of the ham in a crisscross pattern, cutting about 1/2 inch deep. This helps the glaze seep into the meat. Stud each diamond shape with a clove. Place the ham on a rack in a roasting pan. Make the Glaze In a medium saucepan, combine pineapple juice, orange juice, honey, brown sugar, dark rum (if using), Dijon mustard, ground allspice, cinnamon, ground cloves, nutmeg, ginger powder, and fresh ginger. Add cherry juice for a little extra sweetness and color if you like. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Lower the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes until it thickens slightly. Bake the Ham Brush the ham generously with the glaze, making sure to cover all sides. Place the ham in the oven and bake for about 2-3 hours, basting with the glaze every 30 minutes. Add a little water to the pan if it dries out to keep the ham moist. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature; it should reach 140°F (60°C). Add the Garnish When there’s about 30 minutes left of baking time, arrange pineapple rings and maraschino cherries on the ham, securing them with toothpicks. This adds a beautiful, tropical look to the ham as well as extra flavor. Final Baste and Serve For a sticky, caramelized finish, brush on any remaining glaze and turn on the broiler for 2-3 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning. Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing. Serving Suggestions Pair your Caribbean Christmas ham with traditional holiday sides like macaroni pie, rice and peas, roasted vegetables, or fried plantains. The ham’s sweet, spiced glaze also makes it perfect for sandwiches, if you happen to have leftovers! Tips for Perfecting Your Caribbean Ham Clove Usage : Go easy with the cloves if you want a milder flavor, as cloves can be potent. Add Spice : For a little heat, try adding a chopped Scotch bonnet pepper to the glaze for the last 10 minutes of simmering, then remove before brushing the ham. Leftover Glaze : The extra glaze can be served on the side or drizzled over the ham slices when serving. This Caribbean Christmas ham brings the warm, festive spirit of the islands to your table, filling your home with an irresistible aroma and a taste that will have everyone coming back for seconds. Enjoy a taste of the Caribbean this Christmas, and let every bite remind you of warm sun, sandy beaches, and the joyous spirit of island festivities.

  • Auditions for Dancehall Week’s ‘Rep Yuh Parish’ competition extends to November 29

Kingston, Jamaica, November 7, 2024– Dancers and disc jockeys/ sound system selectors from all over the island are being encouraged to enter the exciting Rep Yuh Parish competition for a chance to win up to $1,500, 000 in cash and prizes. To ensure that all talents get a chance, the auditions have been extended to November 29, 2024. Talisa Taylor, Project Manager for Dancehall Week noted that the competition was incorporated to give  undiscovered talents a chance to showcase their capabilities. “Jamaica has a wealth of talent, and oftentimes,  these talents are overlooked simply because they do not have the platform. We want to be able to create a platform for them to be able to make a name for themselves. I implore people who are extremely talented in the area of dance; whether individually or in a group, or those who are selectors to showcase their best effort. This is an opportunity for you to make a name for yourself, and represent not just your parish, but Jamaica,” Taylor said. Applicants may submit a clean, one minute video along with their name, age, parish being represented, and TikTok  handle to repyuhparish@dancehallweek.com  by the deadline.  The videos will be uploaded to Dancehall Week’s official TikTok page upon submission. The videos with the most interaction will be announced as semi-finalists on November 30.  Those who advance to the semi-final round will compete in Kingston on December 14. Finalists will compete on March 1, 2025 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre during Dancehall Week. The best individual dancer will receive $500,000, while the best dance group and best selector/ DJ will also walk away with $500,000, respectively. Adding that entries have already been received, Taylor reiterated that organisers  extended the audition deadline to accommodate more contestants. The Project Manager further said that through this competition, more Jamaicans will be incorporated into Dancehall Week’s festivities  thereby promoting inclusivity. “We had a sound system clash in the very first staging of Dancehall Week, earlier this year and we realised that we were showcasing talents that were already established within the Dancehall industry. We wanted to give other persons, who have not made a name for themselves, the opportunity to be able to shine and showcase their craft. In addition, during the very first staging of Dancehall Week, there was a lot of emphasis on Kingston, so, we decided that this was a great way to reach out to talents from all parishes,” Taylor said. Dancehall Week, slated for February 23- March 2, 2025, is officially a part of the Reggae Month celebrations, promising to be a landmark event that not only entertains but also educates and inspires both new and long-standing fans of dancehall culture.
